Accessory dwelling unit construction for Langley homeowners

Accessory dwelling unit construction creates a separate space for family use, guests, or another household need. The job may include a concrete foundation, wood framing, insulation, siding, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, flooring, painting, and interior upgrades.

The key decision is how much of the work belongs in the new unit. A customer may need a simple living area, a more complete suite, or a space connected to wider home improvements. We help define the use before material choices and construction work begin.

Langley is part of our service coverage, along with Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Mercer Island, and Issaquah. We bring local permitting and building code expertise to the planning stage, then manage the work from design concepts through final details.

  • Confirm how the unit will be used and who will occupy it.
  • Review the foundation, framing, exterior shell, utilities, and interior finishes.
  • Choose materials that fit the planned use and the rest of the property.
  • Request a quote that separates construction work from finish selections.

What a separate living unit changes

A separate unit gives your property another defined living space for household needs.

A planned layout helps the foundation, framing, utilities, and finishes work together.

Material decisions happen before construction details are fixed, so the design stays focused.

Full-service management gives you one project path from early concepts to final details.

How we approach accessory dwelling unit decisions

Match the shell to the intended use

The unit's purpose guides the layout, foundation, framing, insulation, utilities, and finish choices. We start with that use before selecting materials.

Keep construction and finishes connected

A new unit needs more than interior decoration. We coordinate the building shell with flooring, paint, plumbing, electrical work, and other interior details.

Use one project plan from start to finish

Our full-service project management keeps design concepts, material selection, construction, and final finishing in one process. We're licensed and insured construction professionals.

Know when another service fits better

A separate unit is the wrong job when you only need to update an existing kitchen, bathroom, floor, or room. We can assess whether the work calls for an addition, a remodel, or a complete new living space.

Process

How we build and finish the unit

1

Define the unit's intended use

We discuss who will use the space, how it should function, and which rooms or features belong in the plan.

2

Review the property and project needs

We assess the proposed layout, foundation needs, framing plan, utility requirements, exterior enclosure, and interior finish goals.

3

Set the material and work plan

We organize material selection for the foundation, wood framing, insulation, siding, roofing, flooring, paint, and other finishes.

4

Coordinate construction work

We manage the building work and related remodeling tasks through the planned sequence, with clear communication about project details.

5

Complete the interior and final details

We finish the selected flooring, painting, fixtures, and interior upgrades, then review the completed work with the homeowner.

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Linda and her team did an excellent job! We would highly recommend them. We hired her for a kitchen remodel and asked for a very tight timeline. She delivered and we absolutely love the result. She was very commutative and available to us. Thank you Design and Build NW!

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Questions about building a separate living unit

How do I know whether an accessory unit fits my property?

Property fit depends on the intended layout, foundation needs, access, utilities, and available construction area. We review those points with you before the work plan is set. A separate unit may suit a family or guest need, while an existing room remodel may fit a smaller change. Our assessment helps identify the right service.

What part of the property changes the construction scope most?

The proposed unit layout usually drives the construction scope because it affects the foundation, framing, utilities, insulation, and finishes. Existing conditions also matter. We review the property and planned use together, then explain which work is essential and which choices are optional.

When should I choose finishes for the new unit?

Finish choices should be made while the work plan is being formed. Flooring, paint, siding, fixtures, and other materials affect ordering and installation details. We discuss those selections alongside the building shell, so interior work does not conflict with framing, utility placement, or final room layout.

Why does the foundation matter before interior planning?

The foundation establishes the unit's base and influences the floor layout, wall positions, and utility planning. We address that structure before final interior details are fixed. This approach helps connect the concrete work with framing, rooms, flooring, and finish selections.

What changes the quote for an accessory dwelling unit?

The quote changes with the layout, foundation, utility work, exterior materials, interior finishes, and existing property conditions. We discuss those cost drivers during a free estimate. Your quote can then reflect the intended use and the level of work you want, without relying on a generic allowance.
